Motorcycle Headlights

Depending on a motorcycle’s make and model, most motorcycle headlights attach to the fork legs between the top and bottom yokes. Off-road bikes aren't required to have a headlight. However, every motorcycle that uses public roads must have a two-position headlight offering a dipped and high beam. The benefits of a reliable and strong headlight at night or in poor weather are obvious. Yet, with some European countries insisting that all motorcycles use dipped headlights during the day, a suitable motorcycle headlight is essential.

How does a motorcycle headlight work?

Whether your motorcycle lights feature LEDs or a motorcycle headlight bulb, a wiring harness joins the light source to the bike's battery. A handlebar switch turns the light on and off and works together with the taillight. A motorcycle's alternator generates a charge to top up the battery when the bike is running. It is this that prevents the headlight from draining power.

Why do you need to change your headlight?

Motorcycle headlights feature either a toughened glass or a Perspex lens. As hardwearing as they are, taking a direct hit from a kicked-up stone will crack the lens. When this happens it’s time to make a replacement. Moreover, you may feel that your motorcycle headlight isn't bright enough. In which case, you’ll to upgrade to a more powerful beam. Motorcycle headlights, like any component, can look weathered, and a cosmetic upgrade is a solution. Finally, a new headlight is a must-have if you convert your sports bike to a streetfighter.

Types of headlight

Universal fit

A universal fit motorcycle headlight's design allows it to attach to most motorcycles. It does this via straps or brackets. XLMOTO offers a range of universal headlights with the lens fitted into a casing and featuring an integral reflector above the light. This integral visor is useful for streetfighter conversions as it can hide the clocks and wiring. All universal headlights feature a dip and main beam. Meanwhile, others include a position or pilot light.

LEDs

Headlights featuring LEDs or light-emitting diodes are an excellent idea for motorcycles as they are much tougher than conventional bulbs. This feature means they can take the knocks. LEDs also make a natural choice for motorcycle headlights as they last longer and use less energy than halogen or high-intensity discharge(HID) bulbs.

Auxiliary lights

Being seen by other road users is vital for the safety of every motorcyclist. For anyone riding regularly through unlit rural areas, auxiliary lighting is a big bonus. These small additional lights either mount onto a light bar or via a circular bracket that attaches to engine bars. XLMOTO supplies auxiliary lights in several formats for various applications.

For custom motorbikes, base-mounted, small-diameter chrome lights are effective and match your cruiser's look. These additional compact lights are also perfect for adventure-style bikes. The aluminium housing is lightweight and hardwearing. LEDs offer exceptional illumination and mount easily to the engine bars. XLMOTO also offer gloss black auxiliary lights for street bikes. These are 114mm in diameter and small enough to be discreet. Rest assured, though, the LEDs punch out plenty of light.
