FAQ's
24MX Motocross Rims: the Wheel Deal
The wheel rims on your dirt bike have to be extremely strong as they take the entire weight of the motorcycle and rider every time you land a jump. Stock wheels do a good job, but the 24MX range of motocross rims are better, so read on and find out why.
Reasons for buying new rims
Damage – If you dent a rim due to a heavy landing or collision, the safest choice is a replacement. 24MX has an impressive range of replacement rims ranging from budget to top shelf.
Looks - New rims are an ideal and practical way to give wheels a face-lift when re-building a dirt bike during the off-season.
Performance upgrade – Stock wheels are good but aftermarket wheels are better. Most new dirt bike rims are cast aluminum, so by choosing a forged aluminium rim, durability levels will increase significantly.
Wheel sets – Dirt bikers experience everything from rocky terrain to hub-deep mud. For this reason, many motocross riders carry wheel sets for different conditions. Here, aftermarket rims are the ideal solution.
There are many great reasons to buy aftermarket wheel rims. So, when it’s time to invest in new hoops, the 24MX range of motocross rims is the ‘wheel’ deal.
Keep on Rolling with 24MX Wheel Bearings and Wheel Spacers
Wheel bearings consist of steel balls within an inner and outer ring. Wheels have a minimum of two bearings, one on either side of the hub. The axle passes through the centre of the wheel bearings and is clamped into position at the fork legs. Meanwhile, wheel spacers take up the gap. The bearings allow the wheel to rotate freely on its axis.
As the wheel bearings are inside the hub and the lower fork legs clamp onto the axle, very often, there is a small gap on either side. As mentioned, the purpose of a wheel spacer is to close the gap and allow the assembly to bolt together solidly.
Wheel spacers are either steel or aluminium and thanks to 24MX, you can even choose coloured spacers to bling up your wheel.
On a standard road motorcycle, wheel bearings can last tens of thousands of miles. However, due to the constantly changing terrain, dust, mud, and repeated assault on the suspension, dirt bike wheel bearings have a much harder life.
Don't worry; you will still get lots of wear from a suitable set of wheel bearings. To account for the additional stress, off-road riders check bearings regularly. In doing this, they will determine if they may need to change the bearings but depending on usage, this may be every two-three seasons.
Checking for Bearing Wear
Increased vibration through the bars, slight fluttering of the wheel, or a low grinding noise may be difficult to detect while riding. For this reason, a bearing check should be done on both wheels while off the ground.
Spinning bearings slowly should reveal any grinding noise while attempting to twist or tilt the wheel will show movement. Both signs are indicators that the wheel bearings need changing.
Any one of the 24MX replacement dirt bike wheel bearing range offers hundreds of hours of off-road enjoyment. The moment you feel any play though, it's time for a change.
Dirt, grit, sand, and mud all wreak havoc on bearings, and movement means the bearing is no longer running true. Leaving this unchecked can lead to bearing failure over time and wreck the hub.
