Securing Waterproof Motorcycle Luggage: A Step by Step guide

As an enthusiastic motorcyclist, having proper waterproof luggage is essential for protecting your belongings on rides. In this article, I'll walk you through how to securely install a set of soft-shell waterproof saddlebags and a top case on your motorcycle using the straps included in the luggage set.

What's Included in the Luggage Set

The XLMOTO H2O 2+1 luggage set includes two 20 liter saddlebags or panniers, a 28 liter top case, and 11 adjustable straps to securely fasten the luggage to your motorcycle. It's a universal system, meaning it can be mounted on many different bikes, so you'll need to determine the optimal setup that works best for your particular make and model. Take into account where you can connect the straps on your bike's frame and other sturdy mounting points. The adjustable straps allow flexibility in getting a tight and secure fit.

Tips for Positioning the Luggage

Properly positioning the saddlebags on your motorcycle is crucial before securing them in place. As you drape the bags over the rear of your bike, be conscious of the space between the bottom of the bags and your rear wheel. You'll want several inches of clearance even when weight compresses the suspension over bumps. Otherwise, the spinning tire could rub against the bag.

Also take note of where your motorcycle's exhaust pipes are located. The pipes get hot enough to melt or damage the bags if they make direct contact. Mount the bags away from any heat sources.

There are adjustable straps at the top of the saddlebags. Make use of these to evenly distribute the bags so there is no imbalance or weighting to one side. Level and centered saddlebags will handle best once you start riding. Take a step back and eyeball the clearance and positioning before moving onto securing the straps. Minor adjustments can be made, but getting the basics right from the start makes the process easier.

Securing the Saddlebags

The key to properly mounting the saddlebags is utilizing the various straps included in the kit. I attached two shorter straps together to create a mounting loop that wraps around the bike's frame and connects to the underside of each bag. This keeps the bags anchored securely while still allowing them to be detached easily later on.

You'll want to take care to route the straps so they don't contact any hot or moving parts on your motorcycle. The last thing you want is melted straps or a strap getting caught while riding!

The straps feature a handy clip in the middle section. By unclipping this central connector, you can remove the saddlebags without having to fully detach the straps themselves. It makes taking the luggage on and off a breeze.

I also ran an additional strap horizontally between the two saddlebags. This helps minimize any flapping or movement while riding. Excess strap length can simply be tucked into the integrated plastic clips on the sides of the bags to keep everything neat and out of the way.

The key is finding solid mounting points specific to your motorcycle's frame and components. It may take some trial and error to get the optimal setup, but once dialed in, you'll have confidence your luggage is secured properly for the long haul.

Attaching the Top Case

The 28L top case attaches to the saddlebags for a unified luggage system. Use the top case's four straps and thread them through the reinforced loops on the sides of the saddlebags. This connects the top case securely to the panniers.

By mounting the top case to the saddlebags rather than directly to the motorcycle, it allows you to remove the entire luggage set in one piece by simply unclipping the main straps holding the saddlebags onto the bike. This is convenient when you want to quickly detach the luggage, like when stopping into the office or arriving home after a ride.

The top case features a roll-top closure on both ends to seal out moisture. And since it connects to the waterproof saddlebags, it creates a 68L unified storage system to keep your belongings protected from the elements.

Finalizing the Installation

Once you have all the straps mounted securely, go back and tighten any loose straps. Make sure everything is snug so the luggage does not shift or flap around during your ride. Also tuck away any loose strap ends using the plastic clips and holders built into the bags. This keeps everything neat and contained.

Finally, test removing the entire luggage system by unclipping the main connection straps on the front and back. The bags should lift off easily. Being able to quickly detach the luggage by undoing just the main clips makes it very convenient for stopping into shops or the office.

Take a close look and make sure the straps are not rubbing on any bike components that could get hot. And confirm adequate clearance from the rear wheel through the entire suspension travel distance.

Once you are satisfied with the fit and positioning, you can remove any unneeded strap tags and set out for a ride knowing your gear will stay safely stowed in the waterproof luggage!

Additional Waterproof Storage Options

For even more waterproof luggage capacity, consider adding the XLMOTO H2O waterproof backpack. This versatile 28L backpack is designed specifically to complement the saddlebag and top case set.

The backpack is made of durable waterproof material and features a roll-top closure to keep contents dry. Padded shoulder straps and a padded back panel provide carrying comfort. There's also a sturdy waist belt to help distribute weight.

With its bright color options, reflective details, and compatibility with the luggage set, the H2O backpack is the perfect waterproof storage addition for motorcycle rides.
